Lab Description

This lab contains a path traversal vulnerability in the display of product images. The application blocks traversal sequences (../) but treats the supplied filename as being relative to a default working directory.

Objective: Retrieve the contents of the /etc/passwd file.

Step 1: Capture the Image Request

  1. In Burp’s browser, access the lab
  2. Browse to a product page
  3. Find an image request in Burp Proxy

Example request:

GET /image?filename=42.jpg HTTP/1.1
Host: YOUR-LAB-ID.web-security-academy.net

Step 2: Send to Repeater

Right-click the request  Send to Repeater

Step 3: Modify the Filename

Original:

GET /image?filename=/etc/passwd HTTP/1.1

Step 4: Send the Request

  1. Click Send in Repeater
  2. Observe the response
